Maine Trails Coalition The Town of Jay, Maine Won the Maine Trails Coalition’s Inaugural “Ugly Duckling” contest in 2021

030e

The Town of Jay, Maine won the Maine Trails Coalition’s inaugural “Ugly Duckling” contest in 2021. The MTC's Ugly Duckling contest aims to raise awareness and focus on trails that need to be rebuilt and restored, and are in need of some serious TLC. The trail work is slated to take place mid-June! Hooray!

The Town of Jay was awarded a trail assessment and one week of fieldwork from a six-person team from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry's Maine Conservation Corps (MCC), valued at $5,000.

Representatives from the Town of Jay, Maine Conservation Corps, Spruce Mountain High School, and three dedicated volunteers recently met to scope out the project area and discuss logistics.

Shiloh LaFreniere, the Jay Town Manager stated, "The Ugly Duckling Contest was a perfect incentive for us to go out and identify the problem areas where we could use help at the Jay Recreation Area trails. Having the funds and the MCC crew will get us further along in making larger trail improvements than we have capacity to do. We have a great, small crew of trail volunteers, who are excited to have MCC come work on this project!"

Stay tuned for updates as the Ugly Duckling Project in Jay takes shape!
