University of Maine at Farmington Juneteenth The Freedom Day

046e

We celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S. in 1865. On this day, 156 years ago, enslaved peoples were officially freed under the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation, which followed the Civil War.

Juneteenth was first recognized in Texas in the 1980s, and as of May 2022, 48 states recognize today as a holiday.

Happy Juneteenth, Beavers!
