Oxford County Sheriff's Office Scam Alert

Today Oxford Rcc received 2 reports of an attempted scam. Scammers are calling people and saying that someone they know has been involved in an accident. The scammer will then put someone else on the phone who may or may not sound like the person the intended victim knows. They will then demand a large amount of money in cash.

The first report the caller did not fall for the scam, however the elderly subject that was told her granddaughter was an in an accident and had gone to jail because the person that was hit was pregnant lost her baby did fall victim to this scam. She was instructed to go to the bank and take out $16,000 in cash. Someone actually came to the door and collected the money.

Beware of scams. Accidents are covered by insurance. A person arrested and needed to be bailed would require the person providing the bail money to go to meet and officer and bail commissioner at a police station or the county jail OR to the court-house after an initial appearance. POLICE DO NOT COME TO THE PERSON TO COLLECT MONEY. INSURANCE COMPANIES DO NOT COME TO COLLECT MONEY. If it does not sound legitimate in the beginning, it probably isn't!
