On Tuesday evening inside Dearborn Gymnasium, the University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team took down Saint Joseph's College of Maine 84-83 behind a late surge from senior Terion Moss (Portland, Maine).
With the Beavers down by five with 2:10 left in the game, Moss went on a 6-0 run by himself to close out the game and send the Monks home with their third loss of the season. Moss tallied 35 points on the night, along with four assists, five steals, and one rebound.
The Beavers played a phenomenal first half, taking a 49-36 lead into the halftime break. Moss notched 14 points in the first half while senior center Jack Kane (Cumberland, Maine) added 13 for the Beavers. Kane also registered four blocks in the first half as well.
In the first half the Beavers were living in the paint, scoring 22 of their first 24 points of the game inside the paint and 34 total for the half. The Beavers were also able to turn the Monks over 10 times in the first half which resulted in 11 points off turnovers.
In the second half, the Monks tightened up their defense and held the Beavers to just 20 points in the paint. The shot making for the Monks also picked up as they hit 8-15 from the three point line including 4-6 from John Paul Frazier (York, Maine) in the second half alone.
After the Beavers upped their lead to 15 on the first possession of the second half, the Monks went on a 16-2 run to cut the deficit to just a point with 13:47 still left to play. The Monks' run was highlighted by a pair of threes from Frazier, and a pair of layups and a three from Drew Shea (Mount Desert, Maine).
The teams would trade buckets until the 11:33 mark when Frazier would once again hit a three and give the Monks their first lead of the game at 62-60. But every time the Monks would hit a big shot, Moss had an answer. Moss would come down on the other end and drill a three pointer of his own to regain the lead for the Beavers.
Ashtyn Abbott (Farmingdale, Maine), who had a standout performance for the Monks registering 27 points and 14 boards off the bench, would respond to Moss's triple with one of his own to give the Monks the lead once again.
The teams would once again trade buckets with one another as both teams were unable to stretch a lead beyond three points until an Abbott three with 5:11 to go gave the Monks a six point lead. The Beavers would bring it back to within two after another Moss layup and a pair of free throws from Silas Mohlar (Readfield, Maine). Camryn York (Auburn, Maine) hit a free throw and Griffin Foley (Portland, Maine) made a layup to give the Monks an 83-78 lead.
That set up the finish for Moss and the Beavers. The Beavers got the stops of the defensive end that they needed and Moss would take care of the scoring on the other end giving the Beavers the 84-83 lead with 16 seconds to play.
The Monks raced down the court in an effort to regain the lead. Frazier got a shot off but Kane got a big enough piece of it to prevent it from going in and seal the victory for the Beavers.
Kane finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and six blocks for the Beavers. Zachary Mickle (Billerica, Mass.) pitched in 11 points while Nathan Poulin (Williamstown, Vermont) added 10.
Frazier finished with 17, while Foley picked up a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists. Nicholas Curtis (Windham, Maine) added 11 points for the Monks.
