Maine Maritime Academy Mariners Lose Close Game to John Carroll

Maine Maritime women's basketball finishes off their trip to Florida with a 62-60 loss to John Carroll University. Erianna Moore (Fitchburg, Mass.) led the Mariners with 15 points, seven rebounds, and one assist.

 

How it Happened: The Mariners and Blue Streaks were neck and neck in the first quarter, with John Carroll taking a six point lead. The second quarter was more of the same action, with the Blue Streaks going up by 10, before the Mariners catch cut their lead by four right before the half with a layup by Jacquelin Castro (Melbourne, Fla.).

 

The Mariners kept plugging away at the Blue Streaks lead in the third quarter, cutting their lead down to two points going into the fourth quarter. There were four lead changes in the fourth quarter alone. The Mariners took a two point lead with a three pointer by Evelyn Dagan (Castine, Maine) with two minutes to go. John Carroll then scored on two straight possessions to take back the lead before Holly Reeder-Morning (Kingston, Mass.) hit two free throws to tie it back up with 15 seconds to go. Maine Maritime got called for an unfortunate foul with .5 seconds left on the clock and John Carroll hit both foul shots to close out the game.

 

Inside the Numbers:

  • Moore led the Mariners with 15 points, seven rebounds, and one assist.
  • Dagan tallied a career-high 12 points on four threes, along with an assist and steal.
  • Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) recorded 10 points, four rebounds, two blocks, and one steal.
  • Halle Landies recorded 23 points, while Olivia Giunta tallied 12 for the Blue Streaks.
  • Maine Maritime shot 32.1% from the hardwood and 34.8% from the three point line, while John Carroll shot 30.7% from the floor and 24% from three point land.


Up Next: Maine Maritime falls to 4-5 overall, while John Carroll improves to 7-4 on the year. The Mariners return to action on Wednesday, January 4 at 5:00pm for their home opener against Bates College in a non-conference matchup.
