The Northern Vermont University at Johnson Badgers closed out the game on 14-0 run to take down the University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team 62-57 in Dearborn Gymnasium on Friday evening.
The Beavers held a 57-48 advantage with under five minutes to play when the Badgers defense took control of the game forcing seven turnovers down the stretch and sparking their 14-0 game winning run.
The Badgers jumped out to an 18-13 lead after the first quarter behind six points from Emma Buonnano and five from Devyn Thompson.
The Beavers took control in the second quarter, out-scoring the Badgers 18-7 to take a four point lead into halftime. Sophomore Jalyn Stacey (West Baldwin, Maine) was a driving force in the quarter totaling seven points and six rebounds, including three offensive rebounds in the quarter. All seven of Stacy's second quarter points came over a 10-2 run to end the half.
The Beavers increased their lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter after a pair of free throws from Maddy White (Waldoboro, Maine) and a bucket from Jaycie Stevens (Pittston, Maine). The Beavers couldn't stretch their lead any further as the Badgers stood tough and hung around, trailing by two going into the fourth quarter.
The Beavers came out hot in the fourth quarter. Three pointers from Grace Dwyer (Manchester, Maine), White, and Ruby McMinis (Wells, Maine) spearheaded a 13-6 run to take a nine point lead at 57-48 before the Badgers game sealing run.
Stacey was a huge factor for the Beavers all night tallying career highs with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Stevens added 10 points and seven assists to help pace the Beavers.
For the Badgers Paris Atuahene scored a game high 20 points while Buonanno posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Gabriella Wardwell posted eight points and 21 rebounds.
The Beavers are now 1-9 on the season and 0-2 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play. The Badgers improve to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
