The University of Maine at Farmington men's alpine team opened up their race season today, competing in a Reynolds Division giant slalom event at Black Mountain. Simon Spear (Boothbay, Maine) podiumed for the Beavers, taking home 2nd place.
The top three finishers from each team contributed to their team's overall score. The Beavers' three-skier time was 3:22.67 to take 2nd place. Saint Joseph's College of Maine grabbed 1st place with a team time of 3:19.86. The Monks were led by William Strobeck who individually took 1st place with a 1:04.65 two-run time.
Spear finished his 1st run in 33.31 seconds and held onto second place by a little under a second. Spear cut 0.79 seconds off in his second run for a total two-run time of 1:05.83.
Freshman Sam Roy (Frenchville, Maine), who was competing in his first collegiate race, took 4th place with a two-run time of 1:07.75. Roy's 1st run, in 34.76 seconds, had him in 6th place. He was able to cut 1.77 seconds off from his time in his second run, finishing in 33.99 seconds.
Colgan O'Keefe (Westchester, N.Y.) took 9th place and was the third skier to contribute to the Beavers' score. O'Keefe's two-run time was 1:09.09. He finished his first run in 35.35 seconds before dropping down to 33.74 on his second run.
