Freeski Wins Eastern Championship, Snowboard Places 3rd as Both Qualify for Nationals | University of Maine at Farmington
The University of Maine at Farmington snowboard/freeski team competed on Sunday at the ECSC Freeski/Snowboard Rail Jam Championships at Magic Mountain. Freeski placed 1st to claim the Eastern Championship. Snowboard finished in 3rd place overall. Both teams have qualified for the National Championship to be held at Mammoth Mountain in California.
In the freeski portion of the rail jam, Carson Theriault took home the gold medal after registering 20 points. Each athlete has three runs, but their total score is taken from the two runs with the highest score. Theriault's 1st run scored a 9.5. But he scored perfect 10's on his final two runs to finish with the perfect score.
Ryan Brueninghaus took the silver medal in freeski with a score of 17.5. On Brueninghaus's 1st run he scored a nine and then followed it up with an 8.5 point 2nd run.
On the snowboard side, Ezra Mathieu took the bronze medal with a total score of 14.5 points. Mathieu was sitting at 8.5 points after his 1st two runs but scored the best run of any snowboarder with a nine point run in his final attempt to seal 3rd place.
