At Sugarloaf today, the University of Maine at Farmington men's and women's ski teams competed in the giant slalom race on day two of the Eastern Regional Championships with a chance to qualify for the National Championships at Mammoth, California in March. The men's team sat in 4th place after yesterday's slalom event and held onto 6th place after today to grab their spot in the National Championships.
On the women's side, after yesterday's slalom event, they sat in 9th place with some ground to make up as the top-six teams qualify for the National Championships. They were able to make up some ground, but were unable to make enough ground to get into the top six. They still qualified for the National Championships as a 4-way invite.
Men's Highlights:
The Beavers three-skier team of Jacob Roy (Frenchville, Maine), Lake Lindelof (Belfast, Maine) and Sam Roy (Frenchville, Maine) combined to finish in 5:24.95 to take 7th place in today's giant slalom.
Jacob Roy was the fastest Beaver on the course today, finishing his two runs with a cumulative time of 1:47.43 to grab 16th place overall. Roy finished his 1st run in 52.79 seconds and his 2nd in 54.64 seconds.
Lindelof was not far behind Roy. He finished his two runs in 1:48.00 to place 19th overall. Lindelof finished his 1st run in 53.15 seconds and his 2nd run in 54.85 seconds.
Sam Roy had almost identical times in his two runs. He finished his 1st run in 54.84 seconds and followed it up with a 54.68 second run to finish 28th overall.
Colgan O'Keefe (Westchester, N.Y.) had a strong showing for the Beavers today as well. O'Keefe finished his two runs with a cumulative time of 1:52.46. He finished his 1st run in 55.62 seconds and his 2nd in 56.85 seconds to take 33rd place overall.
Simon Spear (Boothbay, Maine) had the fastest 1st run of any Beaver, finishing in 51.92 seconds to sit in 10th place after one run. He was unable to finish his 2nd run and would not contribute to the team score.
Individually for the weekend, Jacob Roy finished in 9th place totaling 113.75 race points. Jacob's brother Sam finished inside the top-15 as well with his 15th place overall finish and 156.46 race points for the weekend. Lindelof finished one place behind Sam Roy in 16th place for the weekend, amassing 157.46 race points. That marks the 1st time in program history where Farmington had three skiers place inside the top-20 at Eastern Regionals.
Women's Highlights:
The Beavers three-skier team of Lauren Kessen (Sussex, Wisc.), Grace Mahmood (Oxford, Conn.), and Hokulani Caroselli combined for a time of 6:04.95 to place 7th in today's giant slalom event.
Kessen had the fastest time in today's giant slalom for the Beavers. Kessen finished with a two-run cumulative time of 1:58.91. Kessen had a pair of nearly identical runs. She finished her 1st run in 59.33 seconds. She then finished her 2nd run in 59.58 seconds.
Mahmood finished her 1st round in 58.61 seconds, the quickest of any Beaver. She finished her 2nd run in 1:01.31 for a cumulative time of 1:59.92 to place in 25th place overall.
Caroselli had a strong pair of runs today for the Beavers. She finished her 1st run in 1:01.93 and her 2nd run 1:04.19. Caroselli placed in 34th place overall with a two-run cumulative time of 2:06.12.
Tegan Andrew (Goffstown, N.H.) was the 4th Beaver to compete today, finishing her two runs with a cumulative time of 2:16.49 and finished in 48th place. She finished her 1st run in 1:07.25 and her second in 1:09.24.
