The University of Maine at Farmington softball team opened up their 2023 campaign in Myrtle Beach this morning against Worcester State University. The Beavers dropped the contest 7-0 at the hands of the Lancers.

The Beavers had the 1st scoring opportunity of the game in the top of the 2nd inning. Mackenzie Dyer (Hancock, Maine) drew a one out walk and Megan Wilson (Belgrade, Maine) laced a single, giving the Beavers 1st and 3rd with one out. Katie Hammer (Ellsworth, Maine) hit a ball back to the pitcher, Jen Thornburg, who cut down Dyer trying to score. Thornburg struck out Chelsea Davis (Gray, Maine) to end the Beavers threat.

The Lancers opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd inning. After a pop out to start inning, Rachel Sinclair and Naraylee Baez ripped singles off from Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) to give the Lancers runners of 1st and 2nd with one out. Sinclair would come around to score on an error to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the 3rd inning, Kiley Merritt (Lisbon Falls, Maine) hit a lead of single and Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) was hit by pitch to give the Beavers runners of 1st and 2nd with one out. After a Christa Allen (Harrison, Maine) strikeout, Merritt was thrown out trying to steal 3rd base to end the inning.

The Lancers added to their lead in the bottom of the 4th inning when Emma Lapoint ripped a two-run home run to make it a 3-0 game. Later in the inning, Baez tallied another single and then raced home when Brynna Meeker ripped a triple, extending Worcester State's lead to 4-0.

The Beavers made a pitching in the bottom of the 4th inning as Brianna Benson (Woodstock, Maine) took over for Schievink. Benson struggled to find the plate in her 1st collegiate appearance, walking the first three hitters that she faced. After the three walks Schievink was brought back into the game. The first batter she faced was Lapoint who ripped a two RBI double to give the Lancers a 6-0 lead.

In the top of the 6th the Beavers threatened once again as Pike and Allen each ripped one out singles giving Farmington runners on 1st and 3rd, but they were unable to capitalize.

Worcester State would tack on one more run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-0 and finish off the scoring.

Pike finished her collegiate game 2-2 with a hit-by-pitch. Merritt, Allen, and Wilson were all 1-3 on the day. Schievink went six innings, striking out one and giving up three earned runs.
