Miguel Angel Pacheco ’24 of Caracas, Venezuela, has a Bates-funded Purposeful Work internship at Celebration Barn Theater a cultural landmark in nearby South Paris, Maine. Master of mime Tony Montanaro, who studied with Marcel Marceau, bought the property in 1972 and turned it into a teaching and performance center for physical theater. This summer marks Celebration Barn Theater’s 50th anniversary.
Pacheco is celebrating his own experience as a Creative Producing Fellow along with Celebration Barn Theater’s half century in business. “The capacity to do a show and learn from different workshops every week has been really precious,” he says.
He’s worked on “Barn’s 50th Anniversary Spectacular” whose lineup featured renowned clowns Bill Irwin and Avner the Eccentric, and a one-woman show, “Tony Montanaro — A Love Story,” created and performed by Karen Montanaro and directed by Robert Post. Pacheco designed lighting and ran sound and lights for the latter.
When he arrived at Bates, Pacheco had already worked in a variety of mediums (primarily as a performer) within theater, dance, installation, and circus. But while studying in the Bates Department of Theater he discovered an interest in production as a carpenter, house manager, and crew member.
This summer’s Bates Center for Purposeful Work internship, deepening his understanding of all that happens behind the scenes, has enabled him to “uplift someone else’s work,” and to collaborate with performing artists in a way that “makes me feel more humble about the space and the work that I’m doing.”
