Bowdoin College came to Leib Field on Sunday afternoon and took down the University of Maine at Farmington 8-0 in a non-conference contest. With the win the Polar Bears improve to 3-0 while the Beavers drop to 1-3.
The Polar Bears got started early when Rachael Peacock (Bronxville, N.Y.) served a ball across the field that dropped to Morgan Smiley (Charlotte, N.C.) who found the back of the net a minute and 12 seconds into the game.
Semaya Bernardo (Kensington, MD.) doubled the Polar Bears lead when she scooped up a loose ball that bounced away from Beavers first-year goalkeeper Paige Gonya (Sabattus, Maine), and put it in the back of the goal. Bernardo would add her second marker of the game in the 27th minute when she side-volleyed a corner kick off the foot of Kyra Hacker (Natick, Mass.).
Ella Olcese (Brookfield, Conn.) would give the Polar Bears a four goal advantage going into halftime when she labeled one for the top corner of the net over the head of Gonya.
Lo Hoglin (Park City, Utah) added two second half goals while Stephanie Christiansen (Annandale, VA.), and Becca Meyers (Bethesda, MD.) each added markers for the Polar Bears.
The Beavers were in their defensive half of the field for a majority of the game as they did not register a shot in the contest. The Polar Bears also registered 15 corner kicks while the Beavers were unable to attempt one.
Gonya had a strong day in goal for the Beavers as she saw pressure throughout. Gonya registered 14 saves in the contests but also made several strong deflections breaking up numerous crosses and corner kicks.
