Maranacook Community High School graduates Coleman Watson (Readfield, Maine) and Aric Belanger (Manchester, Maine) tallied goals to lead the University of Maine at Farmington men's soccer team over Lasell University on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference contest at Leib Field.
After some initial pressure from the Lasers, the Beavers were able to settle down and turn the tables around and sustain some pressure of their own. Watson got the Beavers on the board in the 39th minute. Yusuf Mohamed (Lewiston, Maine) fed a thru ball into the box to Christian Beliveau (Auburn, Maine) who was one-on-one with Lasell goalkeeper, Cameron McDonough (Melrose, Mass.). Beliveau drew McDonough out of his net before unselfishly laying a pass across the goal mouth to Watson who pocket it into the open net.
The score remained 1-0 into the 58th minute when Belanger gave the Beavers a two goal advantage. Beliveau was able to corral a loose ball outside the penalty box and found Belanger on the right side who sniped the bottom left corner of the net.'
The Lasers would get one back in the 63rd minute when Daniel Faynstein (Needham, Mass.) made a nice move to separate himself from the Beaver defense before ripping one into the bottom right corner past the dive of Beaver goalkeeper Jack Wormald (Salisbury, N.H.).
Wormald put together a stellar performance for the Beavers in his second start of the season. Wormald registered seven saves in the contest. McDonough made two saves in the first half for the Lasers before giving way to Gabrielus Bazikas (Southborough, Mass.) who made one save in the second half.
The Lasers outshot the Beavers 18-13, with an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Beavers held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Beavers improve to 7-5-2 while the Lasers drop to 4-9-3.
