The University of Maine at Farmington men's basketball team traveled to Waterville this evening to take on in-state opponent, Colby College in a non-conference battle. The Beavers fell behind early and used a second half surge to battle back, but could not get over the hump and fell to the Mules, 81-70.
The Beavers shot a cool 24.3% (9-37) from the field in the half and fell behind 34-26 at halftime. The Mules jumped out to a quick 11 point lead after beginning the game on a 13-2 run. The Beavers answered with a 13-7 run of their own to cut the lead to five. The Beaver run was highlighted by a pair of threes from Kyle Donlin (Warren, Maine) and Nathan Poulin (Williamstown, Vermont).
Colby once again went on a sizable run of their own, a 10-0, this time to regain a 15 point advantage. A fantastic half from Donlin kept the Beavers in the game and the deficit manageable at halftime. Donlin scored 14 points in the half on 5-10 shooting, including 4-6 from three.
A quick 5-0 burst by the Beavers to start the second half pulled them within three. But, the story of the night seemed to be that every time the Beavers would inch closer, Colby would respond with a run of their own to keep Farmington at Bay. This time, the Mules responded with an 8-0 run highlighted by threes from Noah Tyson and Max Poulton to take an 11 point lead.
The Beavers answered with a 9-2 run of their own led by seven points from Zachary Mickle (Billerica, Mass.) to draw within four. The teams alternated buckets for a couple of possessions as the Beavers trailed by just two with 13 minutes left to play.
But the Mules once again had an answer. They responded with a 12-2 run to up their lead back to 12 points. The Beavers tried to form another run, but would only draw as close as seven.
Donlin put up 19 points to lead the Beavers in scoring. Mickle added 16. Terion Moss (Portland, Maine) and Jack Kane (Cumberland, Maine) each tallied double-doubles. Moss put up 15 points and 10 rebounds, Kane scored 11 and grabbed 11 boards.
Jack Lawson had a big 20 point, 12 rebound double-double for the Mules. Poulton added 19 and Tyson added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Will King pitched in with 12 assists for the Mules.
The Beavers dropped to 4-3 while the Mules are now 9-1.
